Here's the Calgary perspective of the day the Islanders traded both Lafontaine and Sutter. There's no mention of Nieuwendyk being considered or having anything to do with it, but it does say the Islanders were working on trades for these players for months, so you'd think plenty of names got thrown around. However, one note, as of that date in October 1991, Nieuwendyk still hadn't made his season debut coming off arthroscopic knee surgery, so that might have scared the Islanders off if he was ever in the discussion earlier.
