What to avoid? doing what all other tourests go to Europe to do - taking pictures and not submerging yourself into the culture
Good advice in terms of learning some Italian? not a big issue, I found it easy to pick up
Costs for stuff like food, monuments etc...? roughly the same as canada
Taxis? there are tons of illigal ones there that will overcharge you, don't just get into anyone's car
Buses? watch out for pickpockets
Trains? good and timely service
