The CF-18 had an arrester hook similar to what you see in the naval variation of the F-18. I expect that the CF-35 has an arrester hook as well.
And yeah, the CF-35 is the A variation of the F-35.
Right now, in terms of cost the cheapest fighter is the Gripen the most expensive would be the super hornet. Neither has the capabilities of the F-35, both in terms of being a 5th generation fighter, and in terms of the ability to interoperate.
right now, we're so far down on the future cue for the F-35 that we might literally get the planes at the end of the manufacturing run.
Also the Trudeau government saying that the Cf-18's and their Aussie add on can be effective over the next 16 years is foolish, but it doesn't much matter, we're having trouble recruiting and keeping pilots anyways.
When you have the equivalency of a 4 squadron air force and you can't man your planes you have major problems.
