duh, back to grade 7 science class I go. so now it makes sense that I'm actually only removing a minuscule amount of what was originally soil during each mow, and that could even be made up by just the settling of random organic material brought in by wind, etc.
I can now sleep at night knowing this Fermi-sized paradox has been resolved.
