If you're going with your wife you could easily do 4 or 5 nights. If you're a party animal and going with friends, 3 nights is good as it takes a toll on your body. You might have a hard time doing everything you want with just 3 days if it's your first time. You'll probably spend nearly an entire day alone just walking the strip and checking everything out, window shopping, etc. Then if you do a trip to the outlets, that takes up quite a bit of time too. I would assume you'll be wanting to see some shows and go for some nice meals? If so, I would say 4 nights is the way do go.
