We’re fortunate to have a few good populations of bull trout through Alberta. While there are waters that are simply too cold and fragile to withstand much intrusion to habitat and angling pressure, our catch & release regulations are keeping fish in the waters. If all anglers would adhere to the regulations the populations would improve in those sensitive watersheds (such as the well known and fished tributaries to the Kakwa and Smoky Rivers).

Talk about an aggressive fish, I recall back in the early 70's fishing the Kakwa River at the Lower Falls. While pulling in a 16 inch bull trout, a 26 incher was trying to eat it. In those days we used a helicopter to get there. However, with all the oil industry activity since, the access is probably much easier. Thankfully, the catch and release regulations have saved the fish, as you could literally fish out a section of the river in short order.
