With John Turner's death, I discovered that he led a much more interesting life than I would have suspected. He was much more than just a guy who was Prime Minister for less than 100 days in the 80s.

He was an excellent athlete who once held the Canadian record in the 100m sprint. He qualified for the 1948 Olympics but was unable to compete due to injury.

In the 50s, he had a romance with the Queen's sister and it apparently got so serious that she wrote in her memoirs that they may have married if he wasn't a Catholic. To marry him, she would have had to give up her right to the throne. At the time, she was next in line behind Elizabeth and Elizabeth's young children (if Elizabeth had died, Margaret would have likely served as Queen Regent until Charles reached adulthood).

In the 60s, while on vacation in Barbados, Turner saved John Diefenbaker's life when he noticed Dief was struggling while swimming in the ocean. Unbeknownst to each other, they had booked simultaneous vacations at the same resort.
