I just put through the rebate request. Needed to upload a jpg of the sales receipt and fill in a form with the make/model/price etc. I doubt that you would get caught if you returned it but that would probably be against the rules I'm guessing. Who knows, maybe the stores are verifying the sales with the government and they could find out that way?

I would just buy one today, the Ecobee lite is $220 at Rona, the Nest E is on sale for $200. Then you get the $75 rebate, that's pretty cheap.
