I think you're bang on. They have kept it kind of a fun roller coaster ride and chess match without getting super dark but also without getting ridiculously outlandish and melodramatic with a bunch of bad soap opera worthy twists.
Wags is easily my favorite character on TV right now. He absolutely nails every scene and episode he's in. And I think the writers know this because he's getting a lot of screen time this season.
My only complaint is that we need more asian dominatrix, not less. Although it usually comes at a cost, namely seeing Paul Giamatti almost naked.
