Everything Roy ever said about it publicly was that he wanted to go in as a Blue Jay.

The family made this decision for themselves. That's their right, of course, but it's a little insulting as a Blue Jays fan that the Hall decided not to override that request. At the same time, the fault really lies with the Hall itself and its continued decision to try and tie players to teams. It has never actually added anything of value to the induction or the plaque, while only creating strife in a small number of cases.

On Dec. 9, 2013, Roy Halladay signed one of those semi-meaningless one-day contracts with the Blue Jays, in order to retire with the team that drafted him and developed him.

That day, the signing meant something to a proud Halladay. It meant something for him to say thanks to the Blue Jays and their fans.

So what happened between then and now for the Halladay family and the Blue Jays after the late pitcher was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame? The determination was made by the family there would be no team designation on the baseball cap of Halladay’s Hall of Fame bust, which has bothered some Blue Jays fans.

No one is saying for certain what happened here except there is evidence the Philadelphia Phillies treated Halladay’s family with incredible reverence after the pitcher died in a plane crash. When the Hall of Fame announcement was made, for example, the Phillies sent the owner’s Learjet to Florida to fly Halladay’s family to New York and arrange for them to be driven to the St. Regis Hotel.

The Phillies also responded with a more respectful approach immediately upon Halladay’s passing. Whatever Halladay himself felt in 2013, six years later, his family didn’t necessarily feel the same way.
