On a more serious reply, I do remember back in the 60's that the reputation for all Canadian crowds was that the game experience was treated more like a library and it was considered crude to be loud or obnoxious, even after a goal was scored. If you look at the videos of games from that era it's consistently true. A change was underway by 1989, but I think some of what you're noticing is a remnant from the way it always had been.
