Sometimes I wish clubs make only the numbers 1 to 29 available to players, and further still, #1 is automatically assigned to the goalie, 1-6 to the dmen and the forwards get the rest.

I feel very much the second way about numbers. I kinda wish numbers were attached to your position. #1, 30, 31 to the goalies. 2-7 to defense (or to 8 if a team dresses 7 D) 8 or 9 to 20 or 21 for forwards.
Even better if lower numbers were for players on first lines/first pairings.
Dressing for your first nhl game as a fourth liner? Congrats kid, here’s number 20. Been playing well enough to make it to the second line? Here’s number 12.
Admittedly it would be hell on equipment managers.
