Gillies is a favorite because he is a Flames draft pick. It's quite obvious that Rittich is the better goalie. And at 24 years old he still has a lot of potential.
That being said, I'd still like to see Gillies get the majority of the starts. Gillies, IMO, has a higher ceiling and could, one day, be a starter for the Flames.
That being said, if the Flames keep Rittich in the system he definitely sees NHL action before Gillies. Rittich could very end up being the better goalie. He certainly is right now and only time will tell who becomes better. One thing we can say about Calgary right now is that they don't have a shortage of goaltender depth. Hopefully one of these young guys can turn into the next starter for Calgary.
