Regardless of what you feel about Savard's conditioning the fact is that the of that era Flames were in no position to be trading 65 point forwards for a bag of pucks. If Gilbert was on the hot seat then you have to let him go first and see if the player can be salvaged. It was simply terrible asset management caused by the perfect storm of an NHL head coach in over his head and an NHL GM also in over his head.
