Making new jewellery from old

I inherited some very nice jewellery from my mother. It has tremendous sentimental value but some of it is not wearable (due to the stone setting making it impossible to resize). I haven't made my final decision (yet) but wonder if you would be able to redesign a ring so I can wear it? What would happen to the diamonds that are left over and the platinum (I want the diamonds set in the gold from her 22ct gold wedding ring) as well? Do you buy it? Thanks for any help you can give.
