If he goes UFA, the agent isn’t even returning your call unless your number starts with an 8. Are you really gonna let a 40 goal scorer walk over $1mil? Barely 1% of the cap? Buffalo still has $20 million in cap space after this and no other major free agents to worry about. It’s really a no brainer. If he walked on July 1st, they have $30 million to work with, with their number one need being a goal scoring winger.

Skinner is at the tail end of his prime years and heading into the declining years of his career.
It didn't even take one year for Neal's contract to be an albatross.
That being said Buffalo needed to sign Skinner and obviously this is what it took to get it done, it doesn't mean that it is a good contract, Infact with Skinner's inconsistency it will probably look really bad as early as next season.
