Those who deliberately deceive others are a problem, but the much bigger problem is that misinformation takes on a life of its own. People seem to have this overwhelming feeling that they know better than others, that they have acquired some kind of special insider knowledge that most people don't have access to, and that they're doing some kind of service to the world by spreading the "knowledge". No one wants to let go of the idea that they are smarter and more informed than the "sheeple masses".
