Took our Charlie to the vet for a minor cough. Turns out she has an extremely aggressive cancer that started in her tonsils and has gone into her jaw/neck. Most likely in her lungs and other places. I'm very sorry to hear that. Dogs just don't live long enough.
As others have mentioned it's important to be there with your dog at the end. Someone advised me in the past to pay before you take the dog in the back. That way you can just leave after.
I hope it doesn't sound cold but I've been through it twice already and it does help.
