The tail looks like it's coming out of the tip of the tailbone, which makes sense. I think the placement is right, even though it looks a little gross. But to be honest, whenever a dog or a cat walks past you, all you see is a nasty butthole right below the tail. It's part of what makes an animal so gross to some people. I personally don't want to see an anus when I'm just going about my business around the house.
That said, I hate musicals and this movie looks ridiculous. I might see it just to experience what a two-hour cringe would feel like.
