If the plan for arguably DCs most popular character is to be Keaton in a batman beyond, behind the scenes type of guy in the mainstream DCEU, then have the Elseworlds type stories to continue making Batman movies so that fans get their fix. In a cinematic universe I guess I can live with that.
Maybe they're just admitting it doesn't work cinematically, which is too bad because in most of the animated Justice League movies and TV shows Batman was always one of the best characters.

Batman has a pretty strong history of working cinematically though:
Batman
Batman Returns
Batman Begins
Dark Knight
Joker
For me, these may be 4 of the best 5 comic book movies.
As a comic book nerd, I kind of like the multi-verse thing. I also, as I stated, prefer a more grounded Batman movie, that cannot exist in the same universe as super-powered beings. So finding a way to have the side universe along with including Batman in the DCEU is great.
