I think you have to look at their peers to accurately assess.
One thing about Gretzky, there were often seasons where he'd have more assists than anyone had points and certainly in his career he does have more assists than anyone ever had points and 50% more points than the next closest player.
Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs in a season. When he first became a major league baseball player (as a pitcher, don't forget), the most home runs in a season was 11.

I can't recall where I read it - but there was an article (or perhaps it was a documentary) that discussed Ruth basically taking a different approach to his swing - creating a different launch angle.
Basically prior to him - guys weren't trying to hit homers.
