My mom got us a cat when I was 5, and we were fortunate that he lived 17 years. I cant imagine how kids that age would cope with the loss of a pet. But, kids are surprisingly resiliant, and they will recover. Especially when, a few months from now, they beg and plead you into getting another dog.
Though even at 22, it was hard to watch our cat close his eyes after getting the needle. It is like a death in the family. Sorry to hear you had to make that decision. But it is for the best if the dog was in that much pain.
