His junior stats are pretty underwhelming too. When we picked him he only had 9 points in 34 games. Only 2 points in 21 games in his draft year. Seriously dropped the ball on this one. And it’s not like he was a 7th rounder. I find it hard to believe he was the best option in the 5th round that year.

46 points in 25 games in Minnesota High School hockey in his draft year.
He actually went later than most of the scouting services had him ranked. ISS had him as an early 3rd rounder:
Quote:
- 2016 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #112 by FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS
- 2016 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #61 by ISS HOCKEY
- 2016 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #119 by MCKEEN'S HOCKEY
- 2016 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #61 by NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING (NA Skaters)

Obviously, it wasn't just the Flames that liked him. Some people will forgive a lot when they see 6'4" and 200lbs on the stat line, just like some people can't see beyond 5'6" and 150lbs on the stat line.
