If the Flames go far in the playoffs and Smith makes a meaningful contribution to the team success, I could see justification for another 1 year contract.
Thing is, stats being what they are, you have three main contributions to a goalie’s performance any given night
The first two are
- what the other team’s offense brings
- what the Flames D brings
These have little to do with the goalie but dictate what his job is
The third thing is what the goalie then does
I don’t expect tonight to tell us a lot about Smith.
