I Care a Lot
Rosamund Pike can play a villain. Between this and and Gone Girl she is developing a portfolio of truly terrible characters. There was a great idea of a movie here, and a good setup, but...
Spoiler!
Things got way too dumb in the second half; Marla is a monster so we're not rooting for her, so the lazy finish where she gets out of trouble because of the incompetence of the gangsters just doesn't do it for me. This isn't an anti-hero situation, she has no redeeming qualities, so there's no sadness in her death, it's not even satisfying.
Basically a good set up that misses all of the marks after the first act. The best explanation for the end is that she died in the lake and it was all just her dream heading into death, which I've chosen to believe as the only decent exlanation for the mess the movie became.
