Yup. That's why I talked about action franchises and recent years.
The success of Resident Evil and Underworld likely softened the ground for female leads in action blockbusters in general. I would also imagine they're targeted largely for the same demographic as superhero films.
IMO the idea that female superheroes don't sell was always mostly an example of how incredibly stupid studios can be. Or the people in charge never watched any of those films.
Scarlett Johansson leading a film as Black Widow was just an opportunity missed.
