The whole female superhero thing needs to be looked at in context though. Look at the list of female superhero movies:

Supergirl
Tank Girl
Barbwire
Tomb Raider?
Aeon Flux
Catwoman
Elektra
Sucker Punch?

Meanwhile, the X-Men movies have always featured prominent women, something the Avengers franchise has continued.

I was quite surprised by how many people seemed uncertain that boys/men would be willing to watch a female superhero. It's not like they made Sex and the City into superheroes. WW is a prominent hero and when the trailer looked good and positive reviews followed, it shouldn't be surprised that fans of comic book movies went to see it.

Frankly I'm surprised the combination of sex appeal and badassery aimed at a more neutral audience wasn't put to film sooner. Most of the previous female superhero type movies were exploitative or geared primarily to a younger female demographic.

I'd love to see something like Danger Girl adapted. It is a little heavy on the exploitation angle but is meant to be a lighthearted parody or homage to the genre, among others.
