His accolades from 2018 speak for themselves, so it's not a surprise he won the Ballon d'Or. Varane came close to Modric's accolades, but still didn't have as many, nor was he as instrumental in France's WC campaign as Modric was for Croatia.

Modrics stats don’t speak for themselves.He was very good in the World Cup but I didn’t think it warranted winning a Ballon D’or. His season so far this year has been pretty uneventful while Madrid continues to struggle. If accolades are all that matter than many players of past year have gotten robbed of the award. Many had a much better case than Modric.
