Just thought I'd throw an update in for anyone who has time on thier hands

After a month in a half of not working, and with my car problems, and going to all kinds of really dark and depressing places (Both in terms of perspective employers and personally), things finally went my way this week. I've accepted an offer, and bought a new car.

The reason why I've posted this is because I thought that there was one relevant point to all of this.

Its incredibly easy for human being to give up thier optimism and become depressed about the whole thing, and when your in a situation by yourself its amazing the dark places that your mind takes you. I had thoughts of living on the streets, and that nobody wanted to hire me, and one night after stupidly getting myself drunk by myself taking an exit.

People tell me all the time that your work isn't everything, and to some extent I agree, but the human instinct is to value yourself in society by the work that your do.

There's also that whole thought and fear that the money is going to run out and your going to be eating rats and sleeping in a dead van down by the river.

Like I said, dark places.

So whats the moral of the story, well its two fold. 1) Make sure that you always have a support structure behind you, whether its friends or family or whatever. If you don't think you can have those indepth discussions with your friends or family call the depression hotline or find a priest or find a counciler that can help you work through stuff.

I also read and see stories all the time about people that are one paycheque from the streets, fortunately I wasn't there, but I can see how it can happen. Build your own defence fund in case something happens to you, whether its firing or layoffs or the all powerfull screw you I quit moment. You should have a minimum of two months salary put away in case there are dark times ahead.

Oh and don't listen to that dark voice in your head, we all know your brain is trying to kill you at a deep level.

Also don't buy the staffing crisis crunch, there are tonnes of entry level jobs out there, but the minute you move to middle or upper salary levels things get a lot tougher in terms of opportunities or in terms of salary, or in terms of the length of the recruiting process.

I guess thats all, at the very least CalgaryPuck was there for funny stories, and arguments and other things to occupy me when I didn't feel like making another call or sending out a resume.
