Wondering if there's any mechanics out there that can give me some info/advice??

Long story short, my "new" car is a piece and now is practically done with... It was shooting a MASSIVE amount of smoke and my mechanic says he thinks it's probably a head gasket.
I've been quoted about $1500 to have it fixed.
What I'm wondering is: should it really cost that much? Could other damage have been done that would make fixing it a lost cause?
etc...
really any advice, because I'm lost here. I'm a student and I can't afford to fix it for 1500...

On that note...anybody selling a RELIABLE car for preferably(really) cheap?
