Some people are lucky... damn lucky. Some babies adjust right away and sleep well right away. My son was your prototypical sleepless baby. Oh he slept well during the day, but the day time is when everybody else is awake and bothering the heck out of you so they can see your baby. So you're awake at night entertaining your baby, and you're awake during the day entertaining your clueless friends and family. So you'll have to learn when to take a stand so your wife can get some rest. For our next kid (due February) we are going to be smarter. If my wife is tired and needs sleep, nobody is allowed to visit. She didn't get her rest the first time around and it took an abnormally long time to recoop.
