Default Two Large Earthquakes And An Aftershock Hit Indonesia Over The Course Of 12 Hours

Second earthquake strikes Indonesia

Quote:
The 7.8-magnitude quake hit at 6:49 a.m. local time (7:49 p.m. ET), and was centred 200 kilometres from Bengkulu, a city on Sumatra island, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Rafael Abreu, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Colorado, said the quake did not appear to be an aftershock to Wednesday's 8.4-magnitude temblor that shook the same part of Sumatra.
Quote:
First quake struck Wednesday

At least four countries felt the first earthquake, which caused tall buildings to sway in cities as far as 1,900 kilometres away.

The quake struck Wednesday evening local time (7:10 a.m. ET) off the coast of southern Sumatra killed at least five people and injured dozens. It also caused tsunami warnings for the entire Indian Ocean region, officials said, and was followed by several powerful aftershocks.
Quote:
A 6.6-magnitude aftershock forced Indonesian authorities to issue a second tsunami warning hours after the initial quake triggered widespread alerts. Both advisories were later lifted.
An 8.4 earthquake, a 7.8 separate earthquake and a 6.6 aftershock in 12 hours. That is just plain insane. I don't know what is going on in Indonesia in terms of tectonics but it is sure violent!

EDIT: The number of quakes now up to 4. The original 8.4, 7.8, 7.1 (upgraded from 6.6 I believe), and 6.2 with an additional ~10+ aftershocks of 5-6.
