Your definitely right that there were events previous to 9/11 that affected the "timeline" (which is open to it's own interpretations) but I think in this modern era of terrorism and "the war on terrorism", 9/11 became a convenient starting point.

I partially agree, if your looking at the turning point of the modern age of terrorism, where it went from blowing up the occassional airplane or business to a full fledged war, the event would have to be the 1983 attack by the Islamic Jihad on the Marine Barracks was destroyed killing 241 marines, the radicals were emboldened by the fact that the American reaction was surprisingly tempid.
