It is not necessary to have it on 24/7. I do have my fan on 24/7 in the summer for better air circulation. In the winter the fan comes on only when the furnace kicks in.

Is there anybody with allergies in the house?. Different filters available for that. I check my filter once a month but if it is not dirty I don't bother changing it. I work with furnaces and boilers so dirty can be a rather subjective word. Do you use a reusable filter or a throw away?.
