He's just a supremely talented stats padder.

There are greater things to aspire to, and he never really did in Edmonton. That he's still called the best player on earth is both overstated and is setting that bar not as high as it should be set.

He's never won outside of a gimmicky four team tournament in all of his league play since junior. When it goes on this long there has to be something to that.

I think it's the simple fact that he puts personal glory ahead of his team's. When the chips are down he can't help but try those risky plays for said glory and gets burned for it as a result, whereas a player like Crosby was able to shelf the fancy #### when it mattered and shore up the other areas of his game to an above average level to help his Pens teams cross the finish line.

He's always had the potential to be the best ever, but by being unabashed enablers and never pushing him but just catering all the time by bringing in his friends and former coaches, the Oilers have kept him chugging along as he's always been, with the same strengths but also the same warts. They're also godawful at building a team lol.
