There is no doubt he is an elite player. I think looking back the narrative will be he succeeded (expect for winning the cup) in Edmonton despite the road blocks Edmonton put up as a horrible franchise. If he was drafted by another organization I truly believe he would be a better player and would have won something by now.
At the end of the day the window in Edmonton is all but closed and if he chooses to stay all three seasons, the only thing he will accomplish is piling up points. He just passed Marleau for most career points without winning the Stanley cup and sits at 17th. By the end of the year he will be in the 14th or 15th spot passing the likes of Ciccarelli, Nicholls, and Roenick.
