with quad core and the way onboard sound is these days, i don't really think you need a sound card unless you have some sort of $5,000 audio setup. I'm not using one in my setup, but if I find that i'm losing fps in games then i'll go out and get one, but i don't think that will be the case.

I would go with something like what Byrns said. That would turn out a great gaming rig in your price range.

Also on the 640 vs 320, i think that comes into play if your going to game at really high resolutions. if your getting a 23" it's probably going to be 1920x1200, so I would want a 640mb card for that.
