Someone mentioned Old Man by Neil Young. I forgot how much I like that song.

Someone pointed to the unplugged album by Nirvana. I totally agree. Some of their best work is there. Unfortunately for them, they'll forever be known by just a couple of songs when in reality, all three of their albums were cover to cover listenable. Same with GNR. Too bad. They join the ranks of some really good classic bands who only ever get the same, crappy/catchy tune played over and over. And unfortunately for GNR, the ones that get played aren't even as good as the many more that don't.

RHCP - I could have lied
The Doors - Riders on the storm... The instrumental part I can listen to ever and over.
Metallica - For Whom The Bell Tolls (again, the instrumental)(first 2 minutes)

And I suspect that I'm just not listening to the right radio stations, but I didn't hear any Gordon Lightfoot at all except for Edmund Fitzgerald. One day I heard Sundown while cruisning in a buddy's ride. I immediately purchased his Complete Greatest Hits cd and I like the whole cd, but I specifically like 5 or so songs enough to add them to my mp3 player and my computer playlist.
