Captain or not, Backlund is a guy who brings out the best in young players and teaches them how to succeed as NHLers. He and Doan have very little in common in that.
Last time I looked most guys who go cup hunting (like Iginla) didn't win a cup. Backlund is a smart guy and knows this.
