Weegar's contract may actually be a negative at his current play and age. His salary is good but lots of years left on a potentially diminishing/aging player.
I believe the Flames wanted 2026 picks over 27 as well, I think CC has his strategy.
Regardless, different moves on different days. Things do shift and adjust as players are traded. There's no perfect moves without hindsight.
