It reminds me of Damon Runyon's stories about horse players and small-time crooks, where
everything was expressed in terms of gambling odds. There was one story where a doctor wrote on a patient's chart, ‘10, 40, 100.’ He meant that the odds were 10 to 1 the guy didn't last a week, 40 to 1 he never recovered, and 100 to 1 that if he did recover, he would never be the same again.
It's good for a laugh in fiction, but highly annoying in real life. I don't want a doctor
or a sports reporter who talks in those terms; though if I have to have one or the other, I'm glad it's not the doctor.
