Both providers have on-ground repeaters that allow you to pick up their signal without a line of sight to the satellites. I can pick up XM in my garage with the door closed. Buy one at Future Shop, Best Buy or Costco and see if you can get a signal where you want to. You don't need to subscribe since you're just looking for a signal. If you can't get a signal, return it for a refund.
