This might be tied to #1, but opportunity for individual success, especially for players looking for their big contract, is probably a big factor. Will you get a chance to play with an elite player, will you be utilized more, etc... Some of these guys that sign in Edmonton probably care less about winning than they do about hopefully getting some easy points so they can increase their value and jet.
The Flames are kind of in a catch 22 in that regard. A player might look at the lack of production and fear that their production will go down if they joined the team. But a young center or RW who felt they had top line potential but was buried on their current team, might look at the Flames as a big opportunity in the next few years rather than be stuck on a deep team and never get a shot to shine. As much as these guys want to win, they and their agents also consider what best for their long term earning potential.
