By speaking up, he helps to disinfect those rumours, not only about himself, but about other players having trouble with their emotional health. Some fans may get it through their heads that suffering from anxiety, depression, and similar issues does not make you a defective human being, but it is a legitimate obstacle to playing your best at a sport.
