Presumably Conroy had reason to believe that Rasmus was open to an extension with some teams. Either Rasmus had a little change of heart, Conroy didn't read the situation correctly or he was just hoping that someone like Boston would change his mind once they threw big money at him.
In any case, it does feel like a bit of waste of time.
