I might guess the tax situation between the two locales will garner more consideration. California has higher taxes and the Bay Area is an expensive place to live. Both states have high property taxes with California hitting new residents.

And if taxes ARE a significant factor for you, and you're thinking about Boston, you can always live in New Hampshire (which has no state tax)
