Obviously this isn't all about the money, but that has to be more than what they would have gotten per bird in any event.
These are also farm animals that would have been slaughtered at any point, if they hadn't died of Avian Flu that is. And the culling was to stop what potentially could have been spread to many more birds (animals or even people).
I feel bad for these animals, but they were farm animals being grown for meat and eggs, who were going to be slaughtered at some point anyways. From what I can find online, slaughter of farmed ostriches typically occurs at 10-14 months. If you don't like ostriches being killed, don't support the farm in the first place.
