Well IMO I think the situation that changed in Montreal was Kapanen playing so well.
They thought they needed a second line center behind Suzuki, but then Kapanen has flourished in that role and think they determined no need to pay a premium for a top 6 center.
Might as well get a more defensively responsible center like Danault for the third line and keep giving Kapanen leash.
