Its a closed system, and like any closed system they dont have to write code to deal with every possible scenario.
They do what they do very well and they are very good at it. I own a iBook simply for graphic/media type stuff and I own 3 pc because well I get paid to support pc at a higher level so I cant really abandond them.
If you are introducing someone to comptuers who has never used one, say a parent or grandparent, introduce them to a mac. If they have prior Windows useage, then a mac isnt a great idea because the learning curve for older folks is almost unsermountable.
