Oh man. I'd die if a man bought me a trip to the hair salon. That alone costs enough when done properly to break the bank. Every time I go I hate myself for it, but I love it so much I can't help myself. Anyhew, /side rant.
Personally, I don't think a guy should go that all out for a one year anniversary. It smacks of trying too hard to please. Do you want to have to top that for every year for the rest of your life if you end up living that long with this woman? It's a never-ending game of come-uppance with yourself. Maybe I'm too 'low maintainance' or whatever you want to call it, but even just the scavenger hunt is lovely for a one year anniversary.
You start it... take her to the first clue and then leave her. Have everything you need to set up your picnic, except the basket and the food. You have that prepared for her as the final clue. Put directions on top of the basket to where you'll be setting up your picnic, and she can bring the food (that you've prepared and put in the basket along with a lovely bottle of wine,) to wherever it is that you've picked out. When she gets there she'll be met with a scene out of your own imagination. Candles, blanket, flowers, whatever it is that's in your budget, but do something even if it's just wowing her with the view and a blanket and pillows. Either way you're likely to get some and you've created an excellent memory.
